"I am a 66-year-old man. In my early adolescence, I was having chronic diarrhea, chronic abdominal cramps, intermittent tenesmus, and excessive flatulence. I decided to quit smoking, but I got worse; I even had one instance of bloody diarrhea. Unfortunately, I was always misdiagnosed as having bacterial colitis, traveler's diarrhea, food poisoning, etc. All of a sudden, these chronic miserable symptoms disappeared, and I became normal for more than two decades. In my mid-fifties, the same symptoms came back, and again I was misdiagnosed with all diseases but not ulcerative colitis. It was a moderate to severe crisis, and the bloody diarrhea was profound; my hemoglobin was 7 gm/dl. Since then, I have been on balsalazide 750 mg x 3. For the last twelve years, I have been living a normal life and have never used prednisolone again. I never skipped a dose."
