I took Niacin ER 2000 mg.for 3 yrs. I expected the occasional flushing and rash on my face. During this time I became very anxious and unable to deal with stress. I was put on two antidepressants. I started with reflux, nausea,inability to eat without coughing and spitting up, severe weakness so much that I felt a "sinking" feeling and would have to go to bed for an hour several times a day. I attributed the nausea etc. to GI problems. On three occasions during the three years I thought all this was possibly the flu or stress. Three weeks ago my face began to swell. I looked like I had gained 20 pounds. My weight remained the same. I had blisters on my tongue and sores in my mouth( attributed by my GI MD and Dentist to stress)My tongue felt like it was on fire. I called my Primary care doctor and he said to stop the Niacin immediately and take ASA and Benadryl.I started to look up the side effects of Niacin on medical sites and blogs. All of my symptoms were there. Within one week after stopping the Niacin All of my symptoms disappeared including GI symptoms. I no longer need my acid reducing prescription. I have much more energy. My husband says I am a different person. It has now been three weeks since I quit. I can exercise now and I will gradually start to discontinue my antidepressants.I wish I had known of All the side effects. I urge you all to Refuse to take Niacin! Drug works but the side effects aren't really worth it. It is a cheap drug and you can certainly tell. There are better drugs for Bronchitis ie: Azrithomycin which I would recommend.

If anyone has experienced this please email me and let me know how long these side effects lasted when stopping

I feel so incredibly relieved after finding this page. I knew of the generic physical side effects that antibiotics can have, but I wasn't aware of the mental and emotional effects they can cause. I had myself convinced that something was dreadfully wrong with me that weren't showing up in any of my tests. The Keflex cleared up the bacterial problems pretty quickly, so the drug definitely worked for me at least. I have another couple days of treatment to go as of writing this, but just knowing now that my long nights of hopeless emotional distress were from artificial causes almost makes me laugh looking back on it now, even as I still feel these symptoms.

Although I fell terrible right now, I know this med works. THANK GOD for this medicine because it is the ONLY thing that works for me asside from steroids (which I refuse to take again because I gained SO MUCH WEIGHT!) I took this drug about a year ago and it got my UC under control. I had taken asacol, pentasa, and others all with NO effect. I was able to stop taking the drug, and my UC was under control without drugs, but the slightest bit of stress and darned if it didnt flare right back up again. so I started taking it again about 1 week ago, and although it takes a few weeks to start working, I am excited to get it under control again. I dont think I will stop taking it again because I do hate the immediate side effects when I begin taking the drug. The Nausia is almost unbearable and makes me not want to eat, but if I dont eat I get nausiated too. It does go away eventually but it takes a week or two. SO- overall it works if you want to wait. If anyone else has experienced nausia, fell free to let me know. I really would like to talk about others experiences. Thanks!!
