"I’ve carried Narcan nasal spray for the last three years, after a friend I’d never suspected to have a drug problem had nearly died of an opiate overdose when he’d relapsed. And feeling anxiously helpless about not wanting him to die I dove into online research and decided that carrying Naloxone nasal spray was something I could do in order to help anyone near me dying as a result of a relapse. "I was given a spray of this in the nostrils after experiencing labored breathing from taking Hydrocodone. A few minutes after receiving the Narcan spray, I was on the floor! I had dripping body sweats, I couldn’t hear, couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, nothing! It was like I was in a coma! I laid there for maybe an hour before this wore off and I started feeling better. "I died 56 times. It was once a week on average for the year I was shooting up heroin. I have all the Narcan containers on the wall in my friend's garage. The nasal spray has the worst of the side effects. Your head starts ringing and gets progressively more intense. The taste when it eventually hits the back of your throat is awful and lingers for ages. It seems that the precipitated withdrawals are much more pronounced than they are with the injection (IM/SC). After about a year on heroin, I switched to fentanyl and experienced only 6 overdoses during that following year of daily use. I attribute the lower overdose rate to a more consistent opioid level/quality despite the increased efficacy of fentanyl. Narcan/Naloxone has saved my life so many times, and I’ve used it on at least a hundred other people."
