For GERD "I have a 4cm hiatal hernia which causes my GERD. I've been unable to tolerate omeprazole. A Dr. friend told me about Pepcid Complete. It was a lifesaver for me. That, along with elevating my bed 6 inches, losing weight, and following the Acid Watchers Diet. I've been on it every night for three years now. For GERD "Started taking Pepcid after being prescribed pantoprazole (a proton pump inhibitor) by my internist to treat a minor case (level 1) of Barrett's Esophagus. Pantoprazole caused me massive constipation problems (requiring constant use of Miralax) and it can cause osteoporosis when used long term. Besides the constipation, my orthopedic surgeon (I've had 2 knee replacements) suggested switching to Pepcid because of the issues with osteoporosis and felt this was an unacceptable risk for my artificial knee joints. I used Pepcid for over a year and a half and when my next upper GI was done to check my Barrett's issue, my internist indicated my overall condition had improved. In fact, tissue samples taken during my upper GI indicated the tissue did not show presence of Barrett's at all. No more proton pump medicines for me. There are generic versions of Pepcid also available."
