Generic Name: iron sucrose
Brand Name: Venofer intravenous
I take this weekly, and this is my 5th treatment. I have had a gastric bypass, so I do not absorb iron. I have headaches after this medication, my legs have been swollen badly, and I have had a rapid weight gain(12 lbs from my last infusion)!! I am 4 1/2 years out gastric bypass and my weight was maintained nicely until these infusions. I also have not seen any difference in my energy level and my face is still pale as a ghost, my dark circles haven’t began to fade and I still sleep more than I am awake. On top of it all I had to get a chest port for my infusions. I regret ever getting this medication.
Had 5 infusions of Venofer a few months back with no side effect or problems. Shot my iron/ferritin up nicely; I felt pretty darn good. Started another set of infusions today, will keep it going as long as my body unloads my iron/ferritin and I feel poorly again. Even my nails were growing better, but not being out of breath was SOOOO nice with my Venofer boost!
Due to severe iron deficiency, I received 5 Venofer infusions in 2 weeks. Last infusion was abruptly stopped when I suddenly became nauseated and felt slightly faint. The infusions did greatly improve my health.
Since my infusion, I have severe high blood pressure. Prior to infusion, my b/p was taken and normal. After infusion, it was scary high and had headache. I stayed to be monitored. Three days later, it's still high. Anyone else???
i get venofer for anemia, on my second dose i noticed my back hurting. talked with nurse and doctor before second dose and was told it was just a coincident. go ahead and get it. on my third dose i left the hospital crying in so much pain. its been over 3 weeks since my last injection and i am having pain from my back all the way down my leg. i myself dont think it is coincident i think it is a terrible side effect.
Over a period of one week I had two infusions. I immediately had dizziness body swelling rapid weight gain and back pain. After the second infusion I had sudden onset numbness and weakness in my hands that has not gone away even though my last infusion was two weeks ago. My joints are stiff and swollen and I normally run a lot but I can barely walk on some days I am hoping this goes away because I went from being normal one day to barely being able to write my hands dropping things and tripping over my feet because I can barely feel them after I took this infusion. My hematologist is perplexed. I also have a really weird taste in my mouth that won’t go away that makes everything taste disgusting. I’m really concerned that this is going to be permanent and I’m not going to be able to use my hands and feet properly again
5 IV infusions total every 3-4 days. Extreme fatigue, anxiety, unable to concentrate, unable to sleep due to pain. Every dose would heighten the side effects. 2 months later and still fighting the muscle aches and pain, the rest did eventually subside. I felt better before treatments!
I had rny gastric bypass in 2005, and as such cannot absorb oral iron nor iron in food or drink ( absorbed in duodenum, which is bypassed.) Had first iron infusion with Iron Dextran in 2014, then by mid 2021 was so depleted I had shortness of breath, palpitations, constant ice eating, etc. Four weekly infusions of 200mmol of Venofer, in August of 2021. No side effects at all, all symptoms disappeared. Labs this December showed minimal improvement since, now have biweekly infusions x 6, at 300. Hopefully this gets the levels up.
It definitely helps the low iron, ferritin goes up quick with a few treatments. Iron pills do nothing due to years of stomach damage. I get 200mg a few times a year. My first time getting treated I felt horribly dizzy and sick at the very end like I was going to pass out, so they slowed it to two hours instead and that seems to help. I experience side effects like hot flashes, malaise, mild headache and exhaustion for a week or so after. But it works after that.
I have thalassemia and severe iron deficiency anemia accompanied by gastrointestinal issues. When my iron levels are depleted I experience palpitations, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, bone pain, blurry vision, muscle cramps, chest pain, and nasty rashes on my lower limbs. Despite this, I made it to 35 years of age, without "needing" a blood transfusion. Truthfully, I probably needed one before but was accustomed to coping with the symptoms and didn't freak out until my breathing was affected. I previously had been able to get by with extra rest and daily smoothies of spinach, kale, beets, and spirulina. In 2018, at the age 35 I needed a blood transfusion followed by 8 weekly venofer infusions. Halfway through the infusions it felt like I was on the moon. And the boost to my iron and ferritin levels lasted for 8 months. Although there are side effects (headache, stomach cramps, fatigue, brown urine, skin rash) to venofer infusion within the first 1-2 days of treatment, the pros far outweigh the cons. I wish I didn't have to receive infusions but I'm thankful this treatment is available.
Had my first dose on the weekend had a bit of an allergic reaction such as rashes on my arms took a reactine and now I am fine. felt a bit crummy day after. Had this over 3 yrs ago and was feeling fantastic so starting again, I am hoping by round two next week I should start to feel better...
Due to damage from celiac my gut has a hard time absorbing iron. After months of oral iron and no change I received five venofer infusions one week apart. I didn't regain energy until the end of week three. The energy isn't booming but it's worlds better from where I was. My brain fog is slightly better, however it goes away completely when I'm on a paleo diet. I do think it's take time for the body to heal from malnourishment so it's important to give yourself some time. It's not an overnight process. I had no reactions to this drug.
I've had to receive Venofer IVs as a series of 3, as per my hematologist's prescription for iron deficiency which becomes anemia if left alone. First of all, anyone with iron deficiency shoudl know that they must insist that docs check ferritin levels, not just RBC/Hem, etc. Second, be prepared for your urine to look like cola. I don't know why this happens, no one has explained but it's standard for me. Also, I get low blood pressure, dizziness and a weird sensation that my eyes aren't working right during infusing. I get mine spaced over 6 weeks and generally wind up with wildly inflated levels of ferritin in the weeks afterward. The assumption of my specialists is that I have this anemia/deficiency because I also have psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis... and that the inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune atrophic gastritis prevents me from absorbing iron from food. In the past, I had to get emergency blood transfusions but now, as long as I get these, I am ok. The only issue is convincing the doc to infuse *before* my hemaglobin plummets because he doesn't like to prescribe it, even when my ferritin levels are in the teens if my hemaglobin is over 120. I have been told by a number of professionals that I shouldn't have symptoms of anemia from low ferritin alone but after years of dealing with this, their POV is entirely clinical and totally out of step with my actual experience of exhaustion, heart trouble, difficulty climbing the stairs to my home, worsening psoriatic disease symptoms and depression... which all become markedly reduced as soon as the iron kicks in, which usually takes at least a week or so for me to notice. PS. I think there's a link between iron deficiency and inflammation and I really wish that doctors were more concerned with this connection as well as the devastating effects of living with anemia. Overall, I'm happy with the product, it keeps me alive, not sure of any other alternative when one cannot tolerate/asorb oral iron.
I have severe anemia and digestive issues that prevent me from taking iron pills or liquid dosages. Hematologist recommended this treatment although I requested a blood transfusion instead. I was given the entire bag without Benadryl on a fast drip because it was nearing five pm on a Friday. I have a known life threatening allergy to certain intravenous medications. I finished the entire bag with only mild bruising and swelling at the site. As soon as the nurse took the bag down i couldn't breathe. I was coughing uncontrollably and felt as if someone were stabbing me in my neck, kidneys, heart, and lungs everytime I inhaled. My left hand swelled up like a balloon and I broke out in hives. I was rushed to the ER and given Benadryl. I have been experiencing residual side effects for the past four weeks ever since reciving the treatment such as muscle aches, breathing issues, fatigue, digestive problem, neck and kidney pain, night sweats, head aches, rapid heart beat for no reason. Doctor is saying its anxiety but I know it's the medication and I'm not sure if this treatment permanently damaged my body. Every week gets a little better but I can't drink alcohol or certain foods or I will get dizziness and fevers. I would not do this treatment again I am afraid a second dosage will kill me.
I've had 2 of 5 Venofer infusions at the hospital so far, for "severe" anemia. I've had no negative side effects. I'm hoping to feel improvement in my low energy soon. I don't know why I'm severely anemic, it may be because I've had a history of ulcers. My doctor has scheduled a colonoscopy; he says that he will get to the bottom of it. I do take a lot of NSAIDs for my osteoarthritis.
This drug helped my daughter for many years now she is beginning to have hives, and her legs swell, she is beginning to have reactions, they have changed her timing on her infusion to keep from giving more benedryl, but added another allergy drug. Who has had these reactions?
I have had 2 of 3 venofer admin and can honestly say I have not felt this good in a very long time. I felt sick after the first dose but was much better after the second. I have more energy and dont have chest pain like I did prior. I am very satisfied with this drug!
The nurse added this drug to my dialysate. I developed large blisters in my mouth. A severe rash developed around my buttonholes, has lasted for months. My Blood pressure hovers at 90/58. Has gone down as low as 80/58. Medication to raise it does not work. I had two fistulagrams less than 2 months apart. I needed a stint to keep my fistula open. I developed sores all over my abdomen. My skin became so thin it came off with the tape used to cover the dialysis needle openings. I developed pain and swelling in my abdomen. A CT Scan revealed a huge pocket of fluid had developed in my abdomen. The skin over the swelling peeled away and began draining. The fluid was tested, it is stomach fluid. 5 months later the wound is still draining despite surgery, wound-vac and daily wound care.
Anemic. all tests showed no signs of internal bleeding. tested for just about everything. I take omeprazole for a different tissue. this drug inhibits iron absorption. therefore...I'm anemic. Just had my second Venofer 200mg. I have to say its like a miracle drug for me. no reactions...none. the positive..I used to fall asleep at the drop of a hat. had difficulty even driving my car at the end of my 12 hour shift. since treatment. energy is way up. Wife loves the old me being back. ooh la la....lol I just hope this does the trick....
