"I opted to use citalopram instead of estrogen medication because I am considered at moderate risk of breast cancer due to family history. I was skeptical at first, but I'm glad to say it worked for me. It has improved my ability to focus, reduced my anxiety and irritation, and maybe most importantly for this group, it has definitely reduced the frequency and severity of my hot flushes. It hasn't completely eliminated them, but I don't have them very often, and when I do, they are easily managed. I take 20mg a day. I haven't taken them for nearly 3 weeks now (I didn't make time to pick up a prescription), and my menopause symptoms have returned, especially the hot flushes. "I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2015 and because my cancer was hormone positive, I was forced into menopause. The hot flashes were so intense I would throw up, and then I learned that some women have them for more than 10 years. My cancer treatment nurse told me there are some antidepressants that mess with the thermal receptors in the brain and stop hot flashes, so after two years of not being able to sleep and having several hot flashes every hour during daytime hours, I did some research and asked my doctor for citalopram... he also prescribed me gabapentin for night flashes. By my fourth day taking citalopram my hot flashes stopped and I had no need to take the gabapentin because it also put an end to my night sweats. However, after about 6 months I noticed it stopped working so I upped my dose to 40 mg and it has worked wonders since. This is a miracle for Peri and Post menopausal women who cannot take hormones."
"I’m 48, peri menopausal and was waking up every half hour at night with hot flashes and having a number of intense ones throughout the day. My obgyn recommended celexa. I started with 10mg for about a week and then went to 20mg. The night time hot flashes stopped almost immediately and I started having great quality sleep and then after about 4 weeks the day time hot flashes stopped completely! I had some headaches and a little bit of dizziness when I started but nothing bad and it didn’t last long at all. Great option for me, particularly since I can’t use hormone based treatments bc of family history."
